Stephen made his acting debut as a teenager in 1982, starring in the hit West End musical YAKETY YAK . Since then Stephen has worked extensively as an actor in TV, film and theatre. His West End theatre theatre credits include SGT MUSGRAVES DANCE at the Old Vic, Mickey in BLOOD BROTHERS at the Albery Theatre, and Jonathan in KILLERS at the Royal Court Theatre. He starred as Marc in Yazmina Reza’s acclaimed comedy ART at the Whitehall Theatre, Dick in the TOM, DICK and HARRY at the Duke of Yorks’, and most recently as Rev. Shaw Moore in the hit musical FOOTLOOSE at the Novello theatre. Other theatre credits include Hal in Joe Orton’s LOOT and Clint in the CLASS K, both at the Manchester Royal Exchange. He starred as Digsa in THE HOLIDAY at Liverpool Playhouse, Lee Kelly in SOMEWHERE at the National Theatre Studio, and as Dominic in the award winning SHAMROCKS AND CROCODILES at Liverpool Playhouse and the National Theatre Studio. Leading roles in previous national tours have included Scott in UP ON THE ROOF, Wild Bill Hickock in CALAMITY JANE, Geoffrey in THE LION IN WINTER, Wilfred Owen in NOT ABOUT HEROES, Gabriel Oak in FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD and Rev. Shaw Moore in FOOTLOOSE.
Stephen is best known to television audiences as Sean Reynolds from the long-running drama series EMMERDALE. He also starred as Irish rebel Daniel Phelan in the award-winning BBC drama serial THE HANGING GALE, which he originated and co-produced, and as Johann Strauss in the 30 million dollar international mini-series THE STRAUSS DYNASTY. His numerous other TV credits include Alexis Orlov in CATHERINE THE GREAT, Andrei in GRUSHKO, Brendan in HOME FRONT, Bob Street in the drama serial STREETWISE, Ivor Novello in STARS IN A DARK NIGHT and Tex in the comedy series HELP. He has guest starred in numerous TV series, including LIFEBOAT, STAY LUCKY, BOON, BROOKSIDE, JULIET BRAVO, CASUALTY, DOCTORS, THE BILL and BERGERAC.
Stephen’s extensive radio credits include VLAD THE IMPALER and THE BETROTHED. He starred in the feature films BUSINESS AS USUAL and THE HARPIST, and the award-winning short film MILK. Stephen is also a writer for television, and in his spare time he is a keen if amateur mountain trekker! He is married to screenwriter Heidi Thomas and they have a young son.
